Coquet Trust is deeply concerned by the findings in ITV News’ recent report (14 July 2025) highlighting the continued detention of thousands of people with learning disabilities and autism in secure inpatient units. The distressing experiences shared by families, including that of Josh Standish, underscore the urgent need for systemic reform.
Despite longstanding national promises to reduce the number of people in institutional care, over 2,000 individuals remain detained across England, with many subjected to prolonged isolation, restraint, and over-medication. This approach is both inhumane and unnecessary, with clear evidence demonstrating that most individuals can thrive in their communities with the right support.
At Coquet Trust, we remain steadfast in our mission to promote the right to independent, fulfilling lives in the community. We will:
- Provide tailored support to individuals and families impacted by institutional care.
- Collaborate with NHS trusts, local authorities, and policymakers to expand high-quality community services.
- Amplify the voices of people with learning disabilities and autism, ensuring they are central to decisions that affect their lives.
The practice of locking people away because the right support does not exist is indefensible. Every individual deserves dignity, respect, and the opportunity to live in the community with choice and autonomy. The time for piecemeal change is over — we call on national leaders to commit to lasting reform.
